چکیده
We have used scanning tunneling microscopy to study Si~113! 0.2° misoriented towards @11̄0#. Rapid quenching of this surface from 1500–1575 K to room temperature results in a uniformly stepped single-domain surface, whereas slower cooling gives rise to clustering of steps. The thermally induced step wandering and the terrace width distribution of the uniformly stepped surface are analyzed in order to determine the strength of the energetic and entropic step-step interactions. Beside the short-range attractive step-step interaction found by Song and Mochrie @Phys. Rev. Lett. 73, 995 ~1994!# on Si~113! misoriented 1°–5° towards @001#, we found an anomalously strong long-range repulsive step-step interaction on Si~113! 0.2° misoriented towards @11̄0#. The coexistence of a long-range repulsive and a short-range attractive step-step interaction may explain the transition from a uniformly stepped surface at high freeze in temperature to a faceted surface at lower freeze in temperatures. @S0163-1829~97!03012-9#

Atomic-scale perspective on the origin of attractive step interactions on Si„113..
Recent experiments have shown that steps on Si~113! surfaces self-organize into bunches due to a competition between long-range repulsive and short-range attractive interactions. Using empirical and tight-binding interatomic potentials, we investigate the physical origin of the short-range attraction, and report the formation and interaction energies of steps. We find that the short-range attra...
متن کاملHRLEED AND STM STUDY OF MISORIENTED Si(lO0)
The growth of high quality Te on misoriented Si( 100) is important as an intermediate phase for epitaxial growth of CdTe. The misorientation angle plays a key role in the growth quality of CdTe/Si(100); this incited our curiosity to investigate the effect of the misorientation angle on the topography of the surface structure of Si( 100). Our main goal is to show the relation between the misorie...
متن کاملMicro-Raman and micro-transmission imaging of epitaxial graphene grown on the Si and C faces of 6H-SiC
Micro-Raman and micro-transmission imaging experiments have been done on epitaxial graphene grown on the C- and Si-faces of on-axis 6H-SiC substrates. On the C-face it is shown that the SiC sublimation process results in the growth of long and isolated graphene ribbons (up to 600 μm) that are strain-relaxed and lightly p-type doped. In this case, combining the results of micro-Raman spectroscop...
متن کاملEvolution of surface morphology of vicinal Si(111) surfaces after aluminum deposition
We have studied changes in surface morphology of vicinal Si(111) surfaces with a miscut of 1.3° in the [2:11] direction after Al deposition at elevated temperatures. The clean surface phase separates into a (111)-oriented phase and a stepped phase. Submonolayer Al deposition at 650°C, the normal preparation temperature of the Al/Si(111)-(E3×E3)R30° structure, only induces minor changes in the s...

We propose a theory for the observed tricriticality in the orientational phase diagram of Si(113) misoriented towards [001]. The systems seems to be at or close to a very special point for long range interactions. Typeset using REVTEX
